Fernando Gutierrez - President
Ever since I can remember, I loved fishing. If there was water, I was there with a stick and a paper clip hook trying to catch fish. As the years passed I became more addicted to fishing and eventually I took a position at Davey’s Locker Sport Fishing in Newport Beach just so I could fish for free. While at Davey’s I would go out fishing 3 to 5 times a week. This made me a proficient and skilled sport fishermen and I could always be counted on to fill the family freezer. Deep sea fishing was my passion, until the summer of 2008. That summer I spent a lot of time at the beach and I would see these guys in snorkeling gear and with long yellow poles coming out of the surf. One day I finally decided to ask what they were doing, and they told me they were spear fishing but had no luck. Time after time I would see more spear fishermen but still with out fish, that’s when I told myself I would try it and so I went out and purchased the gear. The following weekend I went out of Treasure Island with snorkel and pole spear in hand and took my first fish, a small black perch, you wouldn’t believe how proud of myself I was. I had been catching fish in the 10lb to 80lb range my entire life yet this 8oz fish made me prouder then the rest. As the summer went by I speared and speared trying relentlessly to get friends to join me with little to no luck. After a while I was able to get my brother and a couple of friends hooked or should I say speared on the sport. In the fall of 2009 I saw the need for a spearfishing club in Orange County to educate the public about spearfishing, to sustain the local fisheries and environment, and to unify spearfishers in the greater Orange County area. In April 2010, OC Spearos was officially started and continues to grow today.

Danny Hunsaker - Vice President/Creative Director
After getting a bachelor degree in Marketing from Brigham Young University in 2005, I got a job at Vestal Watch so my wife and I moved to California. While working at Vestal I realized I wanted to work in the creative arts field so I went back to school at night while working at Vestal during the day. In 2009 I graduated from the Art Institute with a degree in Graphic Design. When I first moved to California, I didn't understand the whole appeal and love of the ocean until Fernando introduced me to spearfishing. It was all over from there. Every weekend we'd go out; sometimes even going to work super early in the morning so I could leave at noon to go diving. It's no longer a hobby, but an addiction. In the fall of 2009, Fernando asked me to help start a spearfishing club. Using my background in marketing and design, I created the whole overall look of the OC Spearos - logo, crest, t-shirts, stickers, banners, tournament flyers, and even this website. I feel privileged to be a part of this organization and to watch it grow. I look forward to the friendships and memories that I'll make as the club continues to grow.

Matt Mayry - Community Outreach
I am originally from Virginia. In 2003, I came to Southern California for graduate school. After graduating from Loma Linda University, I moved to Orange County to work as a hydrogeologist in environmental engineering. I met Fernando and Danny shortly after moving to OC. We have had a lot of fun, spearfishing, freediving, and lobster diving the last couple years. I admit I am not a great fisherman, but I enjoy adventures and the outdoors, and there is nothing better than an "underwater safari". I am particularly excited to participate in our dive club because there are conservation, service, and greater recreational opportunities. I am also SCUBA certified as is Fernando and we look forward to freediving with you and maybe even making some new SCUBA friends. I have a beautiful wife and two young children. Don't be surprised to see some of my kids at the meetings, since I sometimes try to give my wife an evening away from the kids.

Carla-Sue Hanson - Freedive Safety Advisor
In 2008, Carla-Sue Hanson began her career in freediving and has achieved great success already. She won the women's division at the Vertical Blue competition at Dean’s Blue Hole in the Bahamas, where she descended to a depth of 43 meters (about 141 feet) on a single breath without the use of fins. Carla is the perfect Safety Advisor as she has experience with shallow water blackouts and can help prevent these from happening to club members through clinics and lectures.
Kyle Dodder - Public Relations
My days of spearfishing started four summers ago with a snorkel and mask from Rite Aid in San Clemente. I have spent years in the ocean on charter boats and surfing, but had never even given diving a thought. After that first plunge it has felt like I’ve still never gotten out of the water. I learn and get better every day and I want to be part of a group of people that feel and strive to do the same. This sport has given me so many things and in all my other hobbies, I have never found a sport with such a sense of community, responsibility and integrity in the individuals that participate. I want to help the OC Spearos to become a place for people to come learn and be part of something that is beneficial to each other, the community and the spearfishing industry.
